As a careers consultant, students often ask me about how to find internships, work experience, summer work, relevant experience……etc. Into the ensuing discussion I often float the idea of being pro-active about finding the experience you need, and approaching people speculatively via the most appropriate media – email, Twitter, talking at events etc.
And often at this point I see a skeptical glaze appear in students’ eyes………
To counteract this, and for positive proof of the effectiveness of this approach – read on:
- PPLS students’ positive experience of the speculative approach – how philosophy graduates Laura and Laura were proactive in obtaining work in Marketing and Public Afffairs.
- Plus our very own Isabella, Careers Information Adviser – how her speculative email to a museum paid off.
Still need convincing? Just use the search term ‘speculative’ in the search box on the right for yet more evidence of just how effective this approach can be.
